Exodus 20:7

7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Or worded another way,
Exodus 20:7

7 “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
But how many people think absolutely nothing of saying "oh, my God!" as an exclamation, or texting "OMG"? I know many Christians, even, who take our Lord's name in vain in this manner every day, over and over, without even blinking an eye. I'm not trying to call anyone out, and I dearly love many of my brothers and sisters in Christ who do this, but it really is offensive. Not so much to me, as to God! He says that He won't give us a free pass for using His name in such a manner, and honestly, I don't want to see God punish anyone for something that most people would think trivial. It's not trivial to God.
So please, if you are guilty of this, please take note, and find a new way of expressing yourself.

ReplyDeleteSecond, This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I daily hear Christians taking the Lord's name in vain by saying or typing "OMG" or even saying "My Lord!" all the time.
My husband and I taught a group of teens on this once. My husband keyed-in on one particular youth and throughout his lesson he'd stop and say, "Jeremy... Oh Jeremy... For Jeremy's sake... etc." After only a time or two Jeremy said "Why do you keep calling my name when you don't want anything?" My husband said, "Exactly! Why do God's people use His name when they don't want anything? To do this - is to use His name in vain." Point was taken.
Like you said, there are many different ways to express ourselves.
